Cervical Smears

All women in Ireland are now eligible for free Cervical Smear Tests from the age of 25-29 yrs every 3 years and 30-65 yrs every 5 years. A Cervical Smear tests for pre-cancerous cells in the cervix. Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is responsible for 70% of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer accounts for 1.8% of total cancer deaths in Ireland. 50% of cases are diagnosed in women <47 years. 180 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed per year. Smear tests help in the early detection of cervical cancer at a stage when it is treatable.

The most common symptom is vaginal bleeding not at the time of your period. Please book in with our nurse for your smear test.

We are registered smeartakers for the CervicalCheck cancer screening programme. You can check your eligibility here www.cervicalcheck.ie.

We can also take Cervical smears for women not yet eligible under the scheme. Please see our Fees section for costs.

Gardisal  is a vaccine available against the strains of HPV which can cause 70% of cervical cancers. We provide this vaccine at our surgery.
