How to register for FREE UNDER 8 GP visit card when your child is born.

Many parents are unfamiliar with the procedure of registering new babies for the under 8 card and automatically assume their baby is covered because of their age. This misunderstanding often leads to confusion and upset when they arrive at the clinic or an out-of-ours service without a valid card, resulting in charges as private patients.

  • In order to avoid this we would like to remind parent of the following:

  • A parent can apply online and leave the PPS number blank.

  • The HSE will text them a GMS number and the card will follow a few days later.

  • Parents should register their child early - ideally at the two check-up.

Please find below the link to the HSE website, where you can find more information. Usually, after receiving a text with a card number, the physical card will be sent to your home address within a few days.
